Karnataka - sheep farmers

Karnataka - sheep farmers

Indian Journal of Small Ruminants 5(2): 82-84

It is argued that the majority of sheep breeders in Karnataka were landless and depended on sheep farming. A survey was conducted of 98 sheep farmers from six villages. The mean size of a flock was 28, with 79 farmers having between 1-30 sheep, and 19 farmers having between 30-50 sheep. More than half of the sheep farmers were weavers engaged in blanket weaving. The sheep wool was sheared twice a year and the yield per animal per year was 1kg of coarse quality wool.
