Monitoring of insect pests and quantification of yield losses in sunflower

The experiments on monitoring of insect pests and quantification of yield losses were conducted under protected and unprotected conditions with some sunflower hybrids at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during 1994 and 1995. Among the sucking pests, leafhopper Amrasca biguttula (Ishida), whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) and sunflower bug Nysius sp. were common, whereas among the defoliators head borer Helicoverpa armigera (Hub.), tobacco caterpillar, Spodoptera litura (Fab.), semilooper Trichoplusia ni and the hairy caterpillar Spilosoma obliqua Walker were recorded. The yield losses of 35.7 to 51.3 per cent were recorded in different sunflower hybrids during 1994 and 2.2 to 22.9 per cent during 1995. In the farmers' field, yield losses to the tune of 36.6 per cent in Ganga and 47.4 per cent in Safal hybrids were recorded during Spring 1994.
