The physiological characteristics of 14 different strains of the edible and medicinal fungus, H. erinaceus, were investigated on beechwood substrate and agarized and liquid media. The strains studied were very similar in their responses to increasing temperature, water content of the substrate and pH of liquid media. No growth was observed at 3 and 37 degrees C. A temperature of 26 degrees C and a substrate water content of 50-70% were best for vegetative growth of all strains.
