Occult heartworm infection in a hyperendemic area of northern Italy

Occult heartworm infection in a hyperendemic area of northern Italy

Veterinaria Cremona 13(4): 53-61

A study of occult heartworm infection was carried out in a total of 179 privately owned dogs from a hyperenzootic area in North Italy. Necropsies revealed that 62 (34.6%) of the dogs were positive for Dirofilaria immitis adult worms. These positive dogs formed the basis for a study to examine the number and sex of the adult worms, to analyse the composition and spatial distribution of intrauterine embryonic stages and to determine the presence of circulating microfilariae.
