Occupation of nesting boxes in a secondary growth forest in an abandoned eucalyptus plantation in the state of Sao Paulo

Occupation of nesting boxes in a secondary growth forest in an abandoned eucalyptus plantation in the state of Sao Paulo

Papeis Avulsos de Zoologia Sao Paulo 41(12): 187-196

A study on the occupation of nesting boxes was carried out in a forest in southeastern Brazil (Sao Paulo), over a 20-month period (October 1991 to June 1993). Nesting boxes (n=36) were built with sections of giant bamboo and fixed to trees, 3 m above the ground. Social insects (ants, bees, wasps and termites) and vertebrate species (amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals) occupied the boxes with nesting, foraging and/or resting purposes. Seasonal use of boxes varied among species.
