Occurrence of pathogenic bacteria in shrimp farming systems of Tamil Nadu

Shrimps (Penaeus monodon and P. indicus) were collected from 35 shrimp farms in 8 districts of Tamil Nadu between 1994 and 1997. Vibrio spp. predominated among the 310 bacterial isolates. Among the Vibrio isolates (n=278), V. alginolyticus predominated (28.8% of the total Vibrio population), followed by V. metschnikovii (16.2%). It is hypothesized that higher than usual nutrient contents and salinity resulted in 'blooms' of Vibrio spp.
