Plant density in a castor bean/maize intercrop. I. Yield and yield components

In a field experiment in 1994-95 in Monteiro, Paraiba, Brazil, castor beans (Ricinus communis) SIPEAL 28 at densities of 1250, 2500 or 5000 plants/ha were intercropped with maize BR 106 at densities of 5000, 10 000 or 20 000 plants/ha. Yields of each crop increased with increasing density of that crop, while castor bean yield decreased with increasing density of maize.
