In India the main diseases of Piper nigrum are foot rot (Phytophthora capsici), slow decline (Radopholus similis and Meloidogyne incognita), anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides , stunted diseases (cucumber mosaic virus) and phyllody (phytoplasma).
