In order to elucidate the pattern of variation in acorn production in mizunara (Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata (Q. mongolica subsp. crispula)), and to establish techniques for forecasting acorn yield, the process of acorn production in 1993 and the amount of acorn production over a period of 6 years (1993-98), were investigated in a crossing garden of 62 clones from throughout Hokkaido, Japan. The trees flowered, and approximately 60% of the flowers had fallen by the middle of July.
