Gala apples were exposed to slow and rapid cooling and pulldown of the controlled atmosphere (CA) room at the beginning and end of cooling, as well as to low ethylene conditions, during storage at 1 degrees C with 1 kPa O2 + 3 kPa CO2. For slow cooling from 18 degrees C to 1 degrees C, 9 days were necessary before pulldown was achieved.
