Work in various species is reviewed, prominence being given to that on ruminant species. Ovarian function depends on cyclical remodelling of the extracellular matrix. Matrix metalloproteinases (collagenases, gelatinases, stomalysins and membrane-type metalloproteinases) cleave specific components of the extracellular matrix, and are inhibited by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases.
