Situation of bean and maize production in Concepcion de Pilas and Veracruz in Pejibaye, Costa Rica

Agronomia Mesoamericana 12(1): 111-117

The socioeconomic study was conducted in the southern zone of Costa Rica, in the district of Pejibaye, located in Perez Zeledon, through an inquiry of 80 randomly chosen producers. The information was obtained in May 1999. About 84% were landowners, with productive units of an average of 14.5 ha. Most of the basic grain producers diversify with other farming activities, such as coffee (Coffea) and pasture. The level of diversification increased with the size of the productive units.
