Species specific husbandry and physiological functions of animals. Development quality and adaptation of group reared dairy calves at specific age periods and seasonal effects by birth periods and rearing conditions

Species specific husbandry and physiological functions of animals. Development quality and adaptation of group reared dairy calves at specific age periods and seasonal effects by birth periods and rearing conditions

Landbauforschung Volkenrode 49(3): 136-152

83 dairy calves calving between October and April were used for long term measurements of heart rate and blood chemistry at 5, 15, 40 and 60 days of age. Results from calves born in October and November and those from calves born during December to April were compared for seasonal effects. Significant differences of mean values could be found for haemoglobin derivatives and oxygen binding capacity of haemoglobin and for the plasma Ca and cortisol concentration at all age points.
