The Polish Pig Genome Mapping project. XIII. Identification of quantitative trait loci affecting carcass fat deposition

The study aimed at establishing the regions of the porcine genome that contain QTLs for traits determining carcass fat deposition. The material consisted of 9 Zlotnicka Spotted (ZS) boars, 37 Polish Large White (PLW) sows (jointly considered as generation F0) and their progeny - generations F1 and F2. Polymorphism of 13 class I markers and 20 microsatellites was used for the identification of QTLs affecting carcass fatness. The linkage analysis between markers and hypothetical QTLs affecting carcass fat deposition showed a significant QTL for per cent of carcass abdominal fat located on chromosome 12 at a distance of 15 cM from locus S0083. Since the test statistic curve peak for backfat thickness reached 6.62, whereas the threshold value for the F ratio was equal to 6.72, it is probable that QTL for this trait is located on chromosome 4 in the region flanked by genes S0001 and S0107. The region flanked by genes TNFB and PI1 on chromosome 7 may be interesting for the identification of QTLs for weight of fat covering ham.
