Dairy farming has faced a difficult time over the last 12 months, and many of the factors which caused these problems are still in place. Therefore, farmers who wish to stay in the industry, need to drastically rethink their dairy business and identify areas of weakness (profitability, milk pricing and production costs), then make the required changes. It is, however, a difficult task not only because any change can be difficult, but also because many of the changes have knock-on effects on other parts of the farm system. This paper outlines some of the main areas on dairy farm economic management which veterinary surgeons should be aware of.
