The effects of human interventions on the fisheries resources of Ganges Flood Plains and the Sundarbans estuary

The effects of human interventions on the fisheries resources of Ganges Flood Plains and the Sundarbans estuary

Integrated management of Ganges flood plains and Sundarbans ecosystem: Proceedings of the National Seminar, Khulna University, Khulna, Bangladesh, 16-18 July, 1994: 112-122

The Ganges Flood Plains contain various types of water bodies (ponds, beels, baors, flooded lands, rivers etc.) while the Sundarbans estuarine area comprises the extensive flat coastal and Ganges delta which is crossed by large tidal rivers discharging into the Bay of Bengal. The total area under water is relatively constant but the area under flooded lands is gradually declining because of various interventions by humans. Conversely, the area under shrimp cultivation is increasing.
