Varroa in the mating yard: I. The effects of Varroa jacobsoni and ApistanReg. on drone honey bees

American Bee Journal 139(2): 134-139

Honey bee colonies were established that exposed developing drones to Varroa jacobsoni, ApistanReg. or neither as a control. The numbers of drones produced by the 3 types of colonies were quite similar. However, the survival of the drones differed strongly. At the end of a 1-day emergence period, the drones that emerged in control, tau-fluvalinate-treated and V. jacobsoni-infested colonies were 97.5, 86.1 and 59.7% alive, respectively.
