Water-use and yield in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) varieties under varying soil moisture regimes

In a field trial at Coimbatore in 1996 and 1997, 4 sugarcane cultivars were subjected to 3 soil water treatments in the formative phase; no irrigation, or irrigation at 80 or 50% depletion of available soil moisture. Water use, cane yield and water use efficiency are tabulated. Mean yield ranged from 84.1 t/ha in Co 419 to 108.0 t in Co 6304. Yield averaged 83.6 t without irrigation and 118.1 t with irrigation at 50% depletion of soil water.
