Genetic variability of susceptibility to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies of small ruminants is mainly explained by the polymorphism of the PrP gene. A survey was conducted in France in order to estimate the initial frequencies of four PrP alleles related to resistance (ARR allele) or increasing levels of susceptibility to scrapie (AHQ, ARQ and VRQ alleles). Representative samples of about 100 animals in 29 sheep breeds were genotyped.
