Physically based runoff and erosion simulation models usually rely on the representation of watersheds using cascades of planes and channels, and on the solution of 1-D flow equations. Often, the effect of microtopography and spatial variability of surface properties on overland flow is considered indirectly by derivation of an effective roughness parameter using optimization procedures.
