Breeding of suppressed-branching melon line 'Melon Chukanbohon Nou 4' ('Melon-parental line 4') and its characteristics

Breeding of suppressed-branching melon line 'Melon Chukanbohon Nou 4' ('Melon-parental line 4') and its characteristics
Labour-saving techniques for pruning of lateral shoots are desirable in Japanese melon cultivation. A suppressed-branching line, 'Melon Chukanbohon Nou 4' ('Melon parental line 4') has been developed by backcrossing a normal melon line 'Erizabesu' to a weed-type, less-branching melon line, 'LB-1' (Cucumis melo var. agrestis). In 'Melon Chukanbohon Nou 4' the upper part of the main stem and the eleventh and upper nodes have lateral shoots which rarely elongate longer than 20 cm.
