Chemical control of rice leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee) in Orissa

Among the nine insecticides (triazophos, 0.5 kg/ha; ethofenprox, 0.1 kg/ha; cartap hydrochloride, 0.5 kg/ha; monocrotophos, 0.5 kg/ha; chlorpyrifos, 0.5 kg/ha; phosphamidon, 0.5 kg/ha; quinalphos, 0.5 kg/ha; cypermethrin, 0.1 kg/ha; and BPMC, 0.5 kg/ha) tested against the rice leaf folder, C. medinalis, during 1990 and 1991 in Orissa, India, ethofenprox was most effective in reducing larval population and increasing rice grain yield, and it was on a par with cartap hydrochloride, monocrotophos, phosphamidon and cypermethrin. Grain yield in the insecticide-treated plots ranged from 26.23 to 35.11 q/ha compared to 21.42 q/ha in the untreated control. However, phosphamidon application resulted in the maximum monetary benefit of Rs. 10.79, followed by Rs. 7.36, 6.43, 4.56, 4.50, 3.78 and 2.81 from the application of monocrotophos, cypermethrin, quinalphos, cartap hydrochloride and ethofenprox, respectively, for each one rupee spent.
