Sugarcane is grown on 190 000 hectares in Colombia, predominantly in the Cauca river valley where the fine climate supports the production and harvest of cane throughout the year. Cane yields average around 105-120 tonnes/ha annually. With cane sugar content averaging 11.5%, sugar production per hectare is 11-12 tonnes, and the annual production is close to 2 300 000 tonnes of sugar. Raw sugar is produced at 14 sugar mills and refined at 5 refineries.
