The densities and vertical distribution of eggs, larvae and pupae of S. noelleri were recorded at a dam which was used to regulate the water level of several fishfarming ponds in Northern Germany. This surface-release habitat was investigated during July-October 1993 by sampling blackflies in defined zones of the dam. The highest densities were recorded close to the top of the dam, sometimes reaching about 170 individuals per cm2.
