Color and odor of Japanese wild flowers in relation to pollinators

Honeybee Science 21(3): 107-113

Colour and odour of flowers are a signal that nectar and pollen are available as foods for insect pollinators. If flowers have a strong fragrance, they are usually coloured white and have a narrow tube where nectar is stored; these are pollinated by moths, or are a free scource of nectar for beetles. If flowers malodourous, they are coloured white or dark brown and are pollinated by flies. Most red or purple flowers have no smell and are pollinated by butterflies or bees.
