Columnaris disease is a bacterial infection of fish caused by the gram-negative bacillus Flavobacterium columnare. F. columnare usually is of low pathogenicity and infects fish under stressful conditions. However, some strains of this bacterium are highly pathogenic and may cause disease in the absence of documented stress. The early clinical signs of columnaris disease are nonspecific and include lethargy, inappetence, and increased opercular movements.
