Compaction characteristics of swelling clay subsoils

Compaction characteristics of swelling clay subsoils

Advances in Geoecology 32: 427-434

The swelling/shrinkage and shear strength properties of coarse structured clay subsoils (smectitic and micaceous) are studied with respect to their compaction and deformation characteristics. Shear stresses at low moisture tensions (0-1 bar) were 15-60 kN/m2, increasing approximately to 100 kN/m2 at tensions between 2-3 bars and 200-500 kN/m2 at 15 bar.
