Genomic DNA encoding polygalacturonase-inhibiting protein (PGIP) was amplified by PCR from 17 different citrus fruits, and the entire sequences of the genes were identified from 10 citrus fruits, 7 belonging to the Citrus genus and 3 belonging to Fortunella, Microcitrus, or Poncirus. Their deduced amino acid sequences showed 95.1 to 99.7% identity, and most of the functionally or structurally important residues identified in other plant PGIPs were conserved in the citrus sequences.
