Compatibility of pastoralism and conservation? A test case using integrated assessment in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

Conservation and mobile indigenous peoples: displacement, forced settlement and sustainable development: 36-60

Field research was conducted in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) in Tanzania during 1997 and was extended to include the adjacent Loliondo Game Controlled Area (LGCA) in 1998-99. The research compared NCA Masai economy, land use, health and nutrition, with that of Maasai living in the LGCA. Results showed that the Maasai living in the NCA do indeed exist in a state of some economic deprivation as compared to their neighbours in the LGCA.
