In a field experiment conducted in Japan 4 rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars (Ch86, Takanari, Taichung65, and Taichung65d47) differing in plant stature were grown on a paddy field which is fairly fertile without nitrogen application and with or without barnyard grass (E. oryzicola in the middle of the rice rows. The reduction in the growth variables of the four cultivars by competition with E. oryzicola was examined.
