The toxic implications of lipid peroxidation for aerobic life have determined an intensive research into the mechanism of lipid peroxidation during the last years. Experimental evidence demonstrates that the protective action against oxygen or oxygen radical toxicity can be achieved not only by endogenous compounds but also by exogenously supplied ones and, thus, an antioxidant therapy has been successfully assayed in the treatment of many disease states.
