The southern states of Brazil are major agricultural producers of wheat, maize, soyabeans and rice. They are characterized by subtropical conditions with occasional heavy precipitation and a warm climate, thus giving a long growing season. Soil erosion and acidity are problems associated with the weathered soils of the region. With the use of soil amendments, it may be possible to prevent topsoil erosion, and thus provide a continuation of crop production.
