The pilot study presented in this paper aims to extend the scope of economic analysis of food safety issues with respect to both topic and approach. As a new topical aspect, supplier differentiation with respect to reliability is introduced as a determinant of consumer response to a food scare. The underlying theoretical model predicts that increased differentiation intensifies the loss of trust in a particular supplier involved in a food scare.
