Under the canopies of two pure Norway spruce (Pice abies) stands in Bavaria, Germany, three different treatments of direct sowing (control, direct sowing and liming, direct sowing covered with beech (Fagus sylvatica) leaf litter) were tested. On 900 sample units, germination and seedling mortality were recorded from 1997 to 1999. The mean number of seedlings did not increase by liming coincident with sowing.
