Serious health problems were seen from 1996 to 2002 in a mixed herd of milking cows and sheep in Franche-Comte, France. Despite adequate energy and protein intake, cows died after a decline in health with intermittent diarrhoea, reproductive problems (mainly anoestrus), anaemia, lameness and coat discoloration. The calves suffered from neonatal mortality and developmental problems. High lamb mortality was seen. Among those that survived, some subsequently died from nervous conditions.
