Coppiced forests with standards in the 'Hardt' region of France (Dep. Haut-Rhin) serve as centres of biodiversity for butterflies (Rhopalocera and Zygaenidae) in the Upper Rhine Valley. In these habitats, 82% out of 97 species known in the natural region could be observed. All but one of these species were found in coppiced forests. Traditional coppicing with standards with a rotation period of 30 to 40 years is still being practiced on approximately 3000 ha of forestland.
