Damage to young coppice regrowth due to browsing by wild animals can be severe. Studies were undertaken in coppice woods - dominated by holm oak (Quercus ilex) - in the Maremma regional park, Tuscany, Italy, to assess browsing damage due to fallow (Dama dama) and roe (Capreolus capreolus) deer. Results suggested that serious damage to new shoots in two small cut areas (0.4 ha and 4 ha) was relatively higher than in two larger coppiced areas (10 ha and 39 ha).
