Heterorhabditid nematodes are known to be very poor anhydrobiotes and there is a considerable variation in desiccation tolerance among different heterorhabditid isolates. In the present study, we attempted to elucidate the causes for the variation among heterorhabditids (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora strain HP88 and Heterorhabditis sp. strains HIS-28 and HIS-33) and steinernematids (Steinernema feltiae strains SIS15 and SCB-L1) with regard to desiccation tolerance.
