Bone mineral density (BMD) is an important factor in osteoporotic fracture risk in humans. The aims of this study were to establish if there was genetic variation in BMD in sheep and then to localize quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with this variation. It was shown that there was significant (P<0.01) genetic variations among Coopworth sheep sires for BMD. This genetic difference was correlated (P<0.01) with muscle and fat body components.
