Harvesting period greatly affects nutrient composition of maize and its suitability for ensilage. The currently used method for evaluating ripeness of maize is determination of dry matter content in ears, stem and leaves, which is highly labour and time intensive. A new method which is being developed by the German Maize Committee (DMK) involves prediction of ripeness using sum of temperatures since maize sowing date.
