This paper discusses the most important elements of the World Trade Organization negotiations for the developing countries and their gains from a more freely functioning world market, in particular in the agricultural sector. It is argued that focusing on trade and international markets offers developing countries an option to avoid the mistakes of focusing on domestic protection, self-sufficiency, and rent seeking.
