Soil formation and nutrient status were studied along a toposequence between 1590 and 3320 m in the south Ecuadorean Andes. In the lower part of the transect with a subhumid climate and lower dry montane forest remnants (soil types Udic Haplustalf and Udic Haplustept), clay mineralogy and Fe fractionation suggest moderate mineral weathering. Base saturation is high in these soils and there is an adequate release of organic N.
