Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe grisea is one of the important rice disease in Sichuan Province, China. Breeding and cultivating disease resistant rice cultivars proved to be the most economical and effective control method. Since 1981, standard methods have been developed by plant pathologists and genetic breeders for 20 years for the identification of physiological races of blast fungus and cultivar resistance tests, under field and greenhouse conditions.
