Development of antibiotic resistance and the occurrence of resistance genes among Staphylococcus hyicus strains isolated from cases of exudative epidermitis in pigs in Denmark

Development of antibiotic resistance and the occurrence of resistance genes among Staphylococcus hyicus strains isolated from cases of exudative epidermitis in pigs in Denmark

Dansk Veterinaertidsskrift 86(6): 6-8

Susceptibility to 13 different antibiotics was tested in 467 isolates of Staphylococcus hyicus from pigs with exudative epidermitis in Denmark from 1996 to 2001. The presence of selected genes encoding for macrolides, penicillins, streptomycin and tetracycline was found in some of the isolates. All of the penicillin-resistant isolates contained the blaZ gene and 85% of the streptomycin isolates the aadE gene. Genes found in some isolates resistant to erythromycin and tetracycline are named.
