Cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines of P. vulgaris were developed by backcrossing Kurodane Kinugasa as a non-recurrent female parent with cultivars Haibushi, Kentucky Wonder, Sabel, Ishigaki No. 2, Golden Wax, Kurosando, Kamogawa Green, Nerina, Ichizu, Sayakazari and Supander as recurrent male parents. In the CMS lines, green hypocotyls were dominant over purple hypocotyls.
