An ELISA with monoclonal antibody to virulent virus was applied to the detection of subclinical swine fever in sows on a large intensive pig breeding farm for 2 years. Of 1120 sows tested, 184 were positive. Further monitoring revealed that 83 sows had breeding disorders, 24 sows had litters with high mortality and 107 sows were culled in 1997-98. Among 1125 sows, 150 were positive, 40 with breeding disorders, 16 with litters of weak body conditions and high mortality, and 56 sows removed.
