Distribution of urinary schistosomiasis among high school students in Utukwang, Obudu, Cross River State of Nigeria

Urine samples collected from 200 high school students in Otukwang community, Obudu, Cross River State, Nigeria, during December 2000-March 2001, were examined for urinary schistosomiasis (caused by Schistosoma haematobium). Results revealed an overall prevalence of 91% with peak prevalence in children between 9-12 years old. There was a higher intensity of infection in females than males (t-test, P<0.05). Mean haematuria positively correlated with mean ova/10 ml of urine.
