The effects of pesticides on soil bacteria have often been studied by conventional techniques based on cultivation of microbial communities and on the measurement of their metabolic activities. Recently, studies using denaturing gel gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA gene fragments have been successfully applied to study the structure and diversity of soil microbial communities.
