A pilot study investigated the psychological response to genetic testing for obesity. Specifically, the study evaluated whether knowledge of obesity gene status adversely influences weight loss self-efficacy. Thirty postmenopausal, obese, white women were screened for the b3-adrenergic receptor gene, which is a gene variant thought to affect weight gain and energy expenditure. A positive obesity gene status did not adversely affect people's confidence in their ability to lose weight or regulate their eating behavior in difficult situations. In fact, women who were gene positive reported diminished contribution of genetics to future, successful weight-gain efforts.
