Driving forces and inhibitors of wood fuel utilization in northern areas: a case study in Kainuu County

In this paper, the driving forces and inhibitors of wood energy utilization are discussed. The aim is to obtain a practical view by analysing Kainuu County, Finland, in a case study. The wood energy resources and the use of wood in existing boilers are discussed. It appears that wood energy in the case area competes with fuel peat and wood residue from mechanical wood processing in large boilers.
